Could the 6.4 Liter really be dead so shortly into it's life?

The Associated Press is reporting today that Navistar/International, the makers of the 6.4Liter Twin Turbo Diesel Engine that Ford is currently using in their Consumer and Commercial trucks, has idled its engine plant in Indianapolis because of an ongoing dispute with the Ford Motor Company.

Navistar said in a statement that it pays suppliers and employees under contract terms and "expects Ford to honor the terms of its agreement." Spokesman Roy Wiley declined to elaborate.

Ford spokeswoman Becky Sanch said the automaker would be able to continue making the F-Series trucks for the "near term." We've been working closely with Navistar ... for many months to resolve the commercial issues we've been having," she said. "We've always honored the agreements we've had and we'll continue to do that."

The Indianapolis factory that was idled made about 400 engines a day. Wiley said he did not know how long the shutdown would last.

So what does this mean to us? Only time will tell.

What do you guys think of this news and Ford's dwindling relationship with Navistar/International?

16. has anyone heard of a powerstroke replacement coming from volvo? i heard that volvo is testing an inline-6 for the super duty.

17. 39. I hear everyone talking about Warrenty!

I have an 2004- F350. In 2005 we were with out that Truck (which I use to make a living) for 104 days as it was in the Shop! 9 Breakdowns, 5 Towable. 21 Injectors, 2 Heads a Turbo and several other things.

All the time this Truck was commercially insured and Plated, with No Income for nearly 4 months!!

In 2006 more problems.

Just broke down again (March 18th), possiblly 1 Head, maybe both, a Turbo again and atleast 1 Injector Again!

This truck has cost us Big time in lost Revenue, Down Time and Stress.

I got into this as Semi-Retired and have Redemed over $100,000 in our Savings to keep this TRUCK on the road and my family a float.

This is not about WARRENTY, It's about DISTROYING LIVES.

I don't know if you have ever being to a Candian Tire, THE BEST PLACE ever to buy something!!! If there is a problem , they don't EVER say, We DIDN'T MAKE it, it's not our Problem. They simply replace it!!! They seem to understand that it's not my PROBLEM!

18. Hey powerjokeman are you crazy the duramax is by far the superior motor no questions. It has the most power the best trany and has the least problems. And whats all this about 4 different motors lb7,lly,lbz and the lmm are all basically the same motor upgraded every couple of years to satisfy the public.Chevy is the king and all ford and dodge can do is try to catch up.

I can respect dodge with the trucks they produce but come on the 6.0 by ford sucks and so far the 6.4 is just the same.

19. Powerstroke man,hey bud, if the Duramax is so dead, as you say, then why does it have The best in class Horsepower (365) and Torque (660. Since they came out with the Duramax, it has outpowered ford and dodge except for the first year, dodge had them both beat.Ford had to go to a twin turbo get get close to what GM is putting out. Now, I love a GM truck,the ride and power, I own one, I also like the looks of a ford truck,and if I saved the money on ford as I do on a Chevy,I would might just buy one. I just wish GM would replace the IFS with a solid front axle. As for the duramax, I look forward to the upcoming 6.9L to again lead the class in HP and torque.

20. why do you guys keep saying that ford had to go with dual turbos to come close to the power of a duramax? you dont even understand why ford is using 2 turbos. there is one small one and one large one. the small one eliminates turbo lag. the large one adds power at higher rpm's. they don't work together to add power at the same time.
and ford owned the horsepower race until dodge came out with the 600 series cummins in 2004, and even then, they were only tied wth ford in terms of hp, and the duramax was still behind with 310 hp while the others had 325. it wasn't until the lbz in 2006 that the duramax had more power.
plus why are you so in love with a japanese engine? is gm that desperate that they have to look overseas for an engine to put under the hood of their trucks?

25. you guys now if duramx is coming up with a 6.9 what the *** ? isnt that ditching the old aluminum piece 6.6? all you want to talk about is power. let me tell you a thing or two about power. Poer isnt *** unless it can be dependable. the 6.9 idi the 7.3 idi the 7.3 idit and the 7.3 dit are in some ways not power beastes but the thing is hoss they are all still running and pulling. while you have you 11 second duramaxes for a year. in 15 i'll still have my 6.9's and 7.3's and my 6.0 so you have no clout to be saying just because my duramax has more power than it's better. because i know for a fact i'm around them everyday and their pretty *** far from reliable. but we could argue all year about this one. peoples families starve because of duramaxes. Y u might ask because "daddys duramax is in the shop. and has been for close to 3 months now". .....OH OK

26. Powerstrokeman, that last blog made no sense at all. If your around DIESELS all day you would admite that whole blog was a bunch of BS... Been a diesel Mech. for 15 years newbe, and I see way more PS than Duras or cummins any day. Now is the 7.3 a good motor? Sure is. But anything after that is junk and you know it. Just becasue your a ford man dosent mean you cant admite that dodge or GM might have somthing better. Give ford some time they will back a track in no time.

27. I will only comment that I work on more Ford F 350's that anything else. I work on privately owned trucks that haul Jayco campers everywhere. They are one ton duallies almost entirely. The Cummins has outlasted the Navistars and Durmaxes by a bunch. We have owners that have over 1,000,000 miles on the original engine with Cummins and I have not seen that with the other two. That not to say that Dodge doesn't have problems of their own: front wheel bearings, tie rod ends, electric fans, and certain year power distribution modules. Overall the Ford parts are harder to get and are more expensive and have the greater need for special service tools. As for the Durmax I have no comment we see so few of them that we do not have any kind of track record for them.

29. FORD need a new diesel supplier, I personally switched over to a 07 5.9 CTD for its durability & proven track record, thats after 31 years buying FORDS. No problems yet with the Dodge, but time will tell, better to have a proven motor than to take a gamble on FORDs new twinn turbo, maybe in 4 years.

30. Here's the way I see it regarding Powerstrokes. 7.3 is a great motor, the 6.0 had WAY too many problems and killed Ford's diesel reputation, the 6.4, who knows!! That's not a good position for Ford to be in considering they're losing money at a record pace. They need to dump Navistar and select a trustworthy company such as John Deere or Cat to restore their tarnished reputation.
