We here at Diesel Power like to think that we rule the world. I mean diesels are everywhere, and nowadays they are usually more powerful that their gasoline counterparts. However, there are some applications where we'll probably never see a diesel engine be installed. What are they? Read on.
Number 1#--Sprint Cars
Sprint cars run on alcohol and run in circles around quarter or third mile dirt or cement tracks. Why will we never see a diesel engine in one of these? Well for one, these 800hp cars require instant throttle response out of corners, and the whole vehicle only weighs about 1400lb with driver, less than a Cummins engine and transmission does by itself. So diesel power ruling sprint cars? Nope, don't think so.
Number 2#--Diesel Ferrari
For a company that celebrates having 5 valves per cylinder, and 9000rpm engines, I'm pretty sure we'll never see a sports-diesel Ferrari. Maybe in medium duty trucks or something (do they build those?) but in a F50? Nope.
Number 3#--Diesel Motorcycle (racing versions)
Weight again here is the penalty. Newer motorcycles make almost 200hp and weigh about 500 lbs. What would a 200hp diesel engine weigh? About 500 lbs at minimum. We might see diesel motorcycles, but we'll never see competitive racing versions.
