The engine connected to this turbo makes 325 horsepower and weighs 275 pounds.

Advanced Propulsion Technologies (APT) along with FEV Engine Technology has introduced an electrically controlled turbocharger.  Basically an electric motor is sandwiched between the two traditional housings.  From the picture it looks like the unit is liquid cooled.  This is a good thing since electric motors don't like heat.

Advantages are:

1. The end of turbo lag

2. Reduced engine emissions

3. Electrical power generation?

4. No need for glow plugs.

This turbo is designed to fit APT's Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder (opoc) engine.  This is basically a two cycle Boxer engine. The result is a powerful lightweight power plant . The U.S. military purchased generators from APT. They run on JP8 and fit in a case the size of a briefcase. A larger version of this engine produces 325 horsepower and only weighs 275 pounds.
