Is there something you would like to ask the biggest diesel manufactures, government officials, or academics? They are all here so let me know.
Today Cummins bought me a free lunch. Well it wasn't just me, they bought lunch for everyone. I would estimate there being 200 people at this conference. The sponsors are the U.S. Department of Energy, Caterpillar, Ford, Cummins, General Motors, Detroit Diesel, BMW, Bosch, Ricardo, Delphi, Navistar etc.
Speaking of free lunch that is what everyone is looking for. Although it turns out when one thing is changed and improved another thing is not improved. For example today's presentations feature emissions control technologies. DPF's are all the rage. Engineers are investigating new materials and designs. The balance is between reducing emissions at the engine so the DPF does not have to work so hard.
Urea is another technology used to combat emissions that is NOx. This chemical is sprayed into the exhaust system and different companies have different methods. FEV is offering a solid ammonia (simialr to NOx) device which shows promise.
The fight against emissions is a two front war. The first front is in the engine. EGR, electric turbos, and advanced combustion (High Efficiency Clean Combustion HECC and Premixed Charge Compression Ignition PCCI) are the weapons.
Top engineers and policy makers are here to answer questions. So here is your chance. I can't guarantee I'll get an answer but I'll ask. The atmosphere is helpful and relaxed.
