I’ve heard of trucks running away while on the freeway, which would be pretty scary. Watching runaway trucks and trucks blowing turbos on youtube is pretty hairy looking too, but in person, would probably be downright frightening.
I have to credit Ben Miller (driver of Double Overtime) for scaring me at Scheid’s Diesel Extravaganza in August. He was the first to pull in the Pro-Modified class, and he had some serious suspension issues while going down the track. Now, I wasn’t exactly right next to the 1800-plus horsepower truck, but my zoom lense on my camera told me I was! As the truck hopped along, and crept closer and closer to me, I found myself peaking over the top of my camera with one eye – just to make sure he wasn’t really that close! I was fine, but common-sense was telling me that hopping trucks can equal broken, flying parts.
Then, as Ben was the first to hook in his class, he also got to run last. And, this time his hopping got worse! I realized after the event that the reason I had no clear photos of his second run was because I was too busy trying to get the heck out of the way!
