One hint–it’s not under one of the Big Three's trucks.
The secret has been out for a while now that Toyota built a 1-ton concept dualie that they’ve displayed all over the place. However, the main area of focus has been around the massive 8.0L Hino industrial inline-six engine. Now, while Toyota’s 1-ton pickups have been put on hold, we can still delve into the components that they plan to use.
This huge rearend seems bulletproof enough, but what about up front? The frontend consists of IFS, which, other than the fact that IFS (in theory) provides a plusher, more comfortable ride, seems “under-kill.” GM gets a way with it because the Duramax doesn’t weigh 1,000 pounds, but we doubt Toyota’s 8.0L weighs under that. In fact, it could easily weigh-in over 1,100 pounds, and is probably more like 1,400. They must be thinking ride comfort over durability or toughness, but isn’t that what makes 1-ton trucks so great?
