It’s no secret around the office. I like the pre common-rail 24-valve Cummins. I like it a lot…

Part of the reason is that they are arguably, the noisiest of all the 5.9L Cummins engines (electronically-controlled). But that’s just up front. Depending on the aftermarket exhaust set up on a given truck (be it stacks or conventional exit), they just sound the closest to big-rigs out of all the Cummins engines (turbo-back).

The fact that they are one of the least loved when it comes to high performance makes sense as well, but for a near stock, or under 500 hp truck, you just can’t beat their exhaust/engine note combination.

We plan on showing the VP44 Dodges some love in the April issue with an install of one of the latest tuners available for the old noise-makers.

So, how about it? Would you like to see more love shown to the VP44 trucks, or older diesels in general?

1. Hell yeah! I would love a build up on a pre-common rail 24v Cummins! Their great and I agree their sound is amazing! It would be awesome to see how to get more juice out of the VP44, instead of getting a hot roded one from Industrail Injection.

3. yes, please do some articles on the vp44 powered cummins I have been waiting for this for a while. The VP44 cummins is the best sounding engine built I love mine and I want to know some good upgrades!!

5. I love VP trucks! I currently run my VP44 truck in the 2.8 class and compete!!!!!! Ive got the trophys and videos to prove it! Its not hard to make this pump produce big horsepower, its all about perfectly matching the air to fuel. I produce almost zero smoke down the track but somehow beat fully built trucks bellowing smoke everywhere. Put my beast in the article

7. Hell yeah!!! I got my first 24v new in '98,had several new ones since,and I'll take a 12/24v over a commenrail any day! My mechanic buddy this last yr.alone rebuilt 37 of the '03-07 commonrails-90% DID NOT have programers,mostly stock pick-ups.Ya the vp pump has issues,but a million times more forgiving overall.I don't care for
hotrod vp's-lots better ways! Bring it on,FULL FORCE!!!!
