Great Turnout, Good Times & Great Sweet Tea Down In “LA”

After a 35-degree night, temperatures warmed up to 60 for Saturday’s drag racing down in Florida…

Oh, by the way, Ron Wolverton of Sun Coast explained to me that “LA” is short for what the locals in Northwest Florida call “Lower Alabama.”

Turnout was great, and as expected, culminated in 2009’s first big diesel event. Eleven, count ‘um… 11 Pro Street trucks showed up to blast down the 1/8-mile track at Emerald Coast Dragway.

If you buy into the “Lower Alabama” theory, then technically a home-state boy won the Pro Street class. Richard Buckles ½-ton short bed Cummins walked away the winner.

The 7.70 and ET Bracket classes both went to Joel Greathouse, and the Scheid Dragster made an appearance, and obviously took home the Dragster class win.

Last but not least, sweet tea was consumed at an excessive (and probably dangerous) rate the entire weekend.

Look for a 5-6 page spread on the Redneck Nationals in the June issue.
