Four-Wheel Drive Tractors

Is It Fair?

This question was brought up at a few tractor pulls I’ve attended in the past…

Question: Should four-wheel drive and/or front-wheel assist tractors be allowed to compete at tractor pulls?

What say you? Should we let them on the track or leave them in the fields?

A couple issues come to mind that are worth mentioning about this:

(1) Oftentimes the sled can’t even stop the tractor (of course, it depends on how it’s weighted, etc…). I witnessed this when I was home in June. Once the sled had all but stopped a Case Steiger, the operator simply clutched, throttled, dumped the clutch, bounced the tractor, and continued on to the tune of a 400-plus foot pull.

(2) Relying on low-end grunt and gear reduction make for a less than thrilling exhibit of power, especially for those that came to watch Super Stock and Modified tractor classes, and of course, the diesel pickups blast down the track.

(3) I know it’s a little sick, but big tractors don’t break (99.9 percent of the time), and a lot of fans specifically come to watch parts fly.
