This weekend, while shooting some photos in the mountains along Interstate 8, I was lucky enough to capture a shot of this triple-axle toy hauler traveling eastbound, and in the midst of full lock-up mode.
When the truck I was in rounded a curve, and was closing fast on a semi descending the grade in low gear (about 10 -15 mph) we swerved onto the shoulder to make sure we didn’t meet our maker—and we weren’t towing or hauling anything. Then, the Super Duty behind us with the toy hauler in tow was soon in the predicament we were just in. And, with passenger cars next to him, and us on the shoulder, all he could do was put his inertia brake controller to use, and pray.
Long story short, no accident occurred, but I was able to realize what was going on and capture this mid-skid shot.
The Lesson I Learned: Whether or not I’m empty, I’ll never underestimate winding, downhill grades again—tractor-trailer operators sure don’t.
