Nothing catastrophic, but my EGTs liked to creep to 1,000 degrees easier than easy, especially in elevation (which we have quite a bit of southeast of Los Angeles). But, what did I expect with a non-intercooled 7.3L with bigger (160cc) injectors?
In order to be more at ease, and not having to watch my pyrometer more than the road while making my way through the Anza-Borrego Desert area’s 100-plus degrees and moderate elevation, I decided it was time to install an intercooler.
After one quick call to ATS, one of its units was on the way, and all I can say is: what a breeze to install. Taking our time, we had the whole system installed in less than 2½ hours. Now, the testing of its cooling ability will be conducted until the install article is completely written, and be put to further use once the truck is ready to tow some serious weight. The article will show why this intercooler is the ultimate DIY job.
