Steyr Motors developed a mechanical backup system for their electronic fuel injectors.   

 These engines are mostly in the marine world but they do come in some military vehicles for example the RG32M.

I've asked my contact at Steyr if they would be willing to send me one of these engines for Project 300. I'm still waiting on a reply. These engines are so cool. They don't have head gaskets. The head and block are one piece.

The EDS is a mechanical emergency drive system for STEYR Motors's electronically controlled marine diesel engines. 
 
This sophisticated mechanical device gives the boat owners the opportunity to engage a mechanical rack mover by shifting a cable in case of emergency. This can be for example a complete breakdown of the board electric system including engine and engine control panel. Finally the STEYR engine will run the boat home on a safety mode.
