What Would You Do?

The rumor mill has predicted that many 6.0L Power Strokes and LB7 Duramax’s will find their way out of warranty, and into smaller, more affordable diesel shops in the coming months/year…

Knowing several 6.0L owners approaching, or just now breaching the 100,000-mile barrier, I’ve noticed their doubtfulness in keeping their trucks. Some have had issues with these problem-child engines and some have not, but all parties seem to be concerned with their truck going “the distance” or not.

My question is, would you be looking to unload (and/or take a hit) on your 6.0L Ford or LB7 GM, or prepare to stick it out and go for the long haul?

PS: Are extended warranty’s worth the time of day?

1. I plan on keeping my 03 F-250 6.0L (104,000 miles on it) most likely and buying the new 2010 Ram Cummins when moneys availiable.

2. So, are you keeping the truck because you want to, or just until you can get into the Dodge? Just being curious here (you don't have to answer that).

I ask because we're starting to put together a story here at the magazine about how to alleviate truck owner's fears of having expensive fixes occur once they're out of warranty, and how to prepare/prevent costly failures.

3. I hope there's a flood of them onto the market. I wouldn't mind having an 04 6.0 for a race truck!

My mother's 6.0 went out of warranty, and then the issues began. Dropping injectors, running rough, and loss of power. We're still trying to get it all figured out.

I guess that my answer to the question is...

If I had a 6.0 that had been having problems, I'd keep it. But only because I'm confident in my own mechanical abilities. For someone without the means to fix something that goes wrong, I would think it'd be in their best interest to get rid of it...

4. No problem on the question.

I plan on keeping my 03 6.0L as long as possible. I like it, its a good truck. Its had very minor problems as far a 6.0L problems go (needed new FICM, PCM, TCM prgromming and batts. due to the previous owners lack of knowledge). It makes good power for a pretty much stock engine and I'll upgrade it slowly as time goes on. Mainly reliabliliy things like head studs, EGR delete, additional filtration, etc.

As long as it doesnt start catastrophically failing I will be holding on to it :)

5. Also, I plan on voiding my new Ram Cummins warranty pretty quick. EGR delete, SCR/DPF delete, tuner, etc.

6. my dad has an 06' f-350 with the 6.0 with 90 somthin thousand miles on it and he hates it he he wants a duramax like i have but he dont have the money at the time hes had problems with the oil pump, injecters, fuel pump, and it still runs like crap when its cold and its never really too cold in louisiana

7. I just bought a '03 6.0L F-250 in July with 136K on it. This is my first diesel and it's great. So far I have a K&N intake, EGR delete, and the exhaust opened up to a 4" straight pipe. I now have 151K on the odometer with no problems while getting 19 to 20 mpg.
