Solution to Nuclear Plant Melt Down

I'm no nuclear expert but couldn't they dig a pit around the plant and then dig a deep canal to the ocean (first make a big burm with floating cement boats and then dirt and cement or whatever debri is available) then destroy the burm or levee and flood the whole area cooling the rods.

Not sure if this would work just throwing it out there. Dig a trench and flood the area with sea water. From the images I can see at the Guardian the ocean is very close to the overheated rods and ponds.

1. Nuclear blast!?!?! WHAT! There is no risk of a nuclear blast from what I hear. Thats nonsense.

Hear what a lot of experts are saying, it seems this thing is being way blowin out of porportion. The worst case scenario is a radiation leak, which granted isnt good.

2. I'm pretty sure a lot has already leaked out. I heard they are using police water trucks and helicopters to douse the rods.

Well there was a hydrogen blast already that blew the roof of the containment thing.

I'm pretty sure its melting out of control right now.

3. OK I changed the title to melt down which is different than a blast. Still they both will spew all kinds of radioactive waste into the air. We're supposed to be able to detect the radiation on the west coast Friday. It will be like going through an x-ray at an airport or less so they say.

I'm worried about the effects of this whole thing. One of the rods is 70 percent damaged that means only 30% still submerged.

4. The Japanese power plant officials who run the country (I guess) differ from the US experts on what's actually happening. Flooding in my mind is better than spraying with a hose. I guess the workers are being exposed to 250 megagooogles (or something like that) of radiation as they spray the flames. Sometimes the radiation spikes so high they have to take cover. If the MOX reactor with plutonium starts leaking not good. The oil spill at the bottom of the ocean will be just as accessible as that place with all the radiation.

Go to any news station and see for yourself.

I'd like to find one scientist who says things will be OK. Except from Tokyo Electric or whoever the owner was.

They should have put the diesel engines on the roof. Instead of in the basement. DOH!

5. The Japanese Govt. says 20 miles ok from the blast.

USA says 50 miles should evacuate.

This is going to take a long time to control. Multiple reactors and multiple cooling pools need containing.

7. Interesting idea. I was thinking that would be a good idea or something like that, but they wont, specifically because we care more about the fish than the millions of people in Japan. Still, I am not sure how exactly that would be most effective. You are basically trying to contain a somewhat out of control nuclear reaction with near or at critical mass. They really need to ask what is the lesser of two evils when dealing with it. Personally, I would evacuate the area and hit the reactor core with a large, armor piercing style missile. You might have a small, less than one mile radius, full of plutonium, but it is better than complete obliteration of all things within 20 or so miles and severe damage/radiation sickness+death to things within 100 miles.

8. To clarify, making a mess by hitting it with a missile would be better than having a nuclear reaction with critical mass. The missile strike would likely separate some of the fuel, and exponentially reduce the reaction.

I can't imagine what it would be like for the guy inside the fire truck squirting the water 50 yards at exposed fuel rods! Then the helicopter pilot dropping the water and dodging radiation plumes at the same time. Amazing. I heard they had a fast car a few days ago that had a geiger counter they had to keep moving to stand the radiation at the gate of the facility.

They better act fast or maybe only be able to watch from a distance.

They say they are trying to run a big electric cord to get the pumps started. Sounds fishy. I heard GE had 10 turbine generators to make electriciy. How much power do they need to make the pumps pump 12,000 gallons a day I think..something is wrong with the container and the water just runs out.

So How about this idea instead...

Get some charges to make a burm around the plant on three sides. Make the burm 60 feet high. Pump in quick drying cement and inflatable plastic to make the containment. Pump the water in and use the tides to regulate the flow. You could keep most of the water in the container.

Hopefully they got it figured out and don't need any advice but it looks like they are scrambling so it couldn't hurt to brain storm ideas.

My Grandpa fought in the Philippines in WWII. He also went through Japan after the bombs went off. He said it looked horrible and he felt sorry for them. He has a lot of respect for the Japanese people. My grandpa is still alive today after I wonder how much radiation exposure from his tour. Plus working in a body shop before safety concerns we have today.

Yes nuclear radiation has killed people.

A report by the Chernobyl Forum — a group comprising the International Atomic Energy Agency and several other U.N. groups(pro nuclear groups) — last year said only 56 deaths thus far could be connected to Chernobyl and about 4,000 deaths total would ultimately be linked to the accident.
Other non pro nuclear groups put the number who will eventually die from cancer at over a million.

If you look at everything that is happening through a republican or democrat view point you won't be very close to reality. Just because you can't see radiation doesen't mean it can't kill you. Nuclear bombs produce radiation that has killed people before too.

Yes peole have died from radiation. To much will kill you out right or kill you over time. Like the firefighters and such around the Chernobyl accident.

Interesting though, animal life around Chernobly is back to quote un quote "normal" according to a Discovery channel show I saw a while ago. The wild life still shows high amounts of radiation, yet survives and reproduces fine without mutation or disease.

Although we human are pethetic compared to pretty much any animal in terms of resilience to our environments changes. If only we were as tough as microbes.

Any catch the Science channel show series "One Ocean"?? Pretty interesting stuff. Anerobic microbes are our real enemy! Little bastards, haha.

Microbes helped force (I think) 13 out of 14 know mass extinction events.
