Over the weekend I managed to obtain exactly 30 mpg with the Jeep Liberty CRD—and then squeezed even more out of it on the drive home...
Thanks to Green Diesel Engineering's Eco tune (and a lightweight right foot), the mighty CRD took me to the Thunder In Muncie event in eastern Indiana on Saturday (which I'll talk about tomorrow) and then inched its way back home. Here's the first fill up's info:
Speed: 65 mph (cruise control, no A/C)
Route: I-72/I-74 east, I-465 north, I-69 north
After refilling at the above station (which was located along I-74 west in Indy), I headed due west at 65 mph, then dropped to 64 mph, followed by 63 mph. 195.5 miles later, and promptly after getting off the highway, I filled up again for a 100% highway number. Here it is:
Speed: 63-65 mph (cruise control, no A/C)
Did I have to drive like a grandpa to do it? Yes. Was it hard to drive 65 (or slower) hour after hour? Yes. Would I do it again? Maybe. If I do, I'll drive like a great grandpa, and go 55-60. The Jeep seemed to really sip fuel at 65 (where the tach rests at 1,900 rpm). I've always found that my vehicles get the best mileage when engine speed is kept at its peak torque rpm. For the Jeep, that's 1,800 rpm, so that's on the to-do list.
It's not a lot of fun getting passed by semis and Cadillac DeVille's, so I don't know how soon I'll be attempting the 55 or 60 mph run.
I also have some "normal" Interstate cruising numbers. Here they are:
Speed: 70-72 mph (cruise control, no A/C)
