What some of you already know, is that a Ford diesel went 182mph a few weeks ago at Bonneville, making it the fastest stock-bodied diesel on the planet.
After the Ford's tremendous feat, the news hit the internet, in a very abbreviated form. Some was mentioned about the truck, but not all. Pretty soon I was hearing about how the new Ford diesel could do 182mph off the showroom floor. Uh, no. That's the problem with abbreviated news and people's short attention spans.
We're doing some more digging here at Diesel Power because, hey, it's our job man! We found out the the truck got about 6mpg on is 160+mph average, including the 180+ exit speed....not bad fuel economy for going more than 160mph! It also has an enormous 75mm Garrett GT4202 turbo in place of the factory unit, twin air-to ice water intercoolers, and makes more than 500rwhp, which makes it one of the most powerful 6.7L trucks out there.
It also has a stock-ish fuel system, that has been heavily massaged. While Ford was behind the Bonneville effort, our contact indicated that nothing was that outrageous on the truck, it was just low, slippery, and powerful. Look for more details coming soon in the mag on this wicked ride.
