A DIESEL on the cover of Hot Rod!

It's actually happened before, as both Mike Racke's Duramax Chevelle, and Mike Wood's diesel Mustang have also appeared on the cover of Hot Rod.

The lastest diesel to make the lead is owned by Mike Harrah, proving that you have to be named "Mike" to get a diesel on the cover of one of the most well-known car mags out there. The 24 cylinder Detroit has 12 blowers and "a lot" of nitrous. With Wayne Talkington's 8V92 Detroit running 11s in a 9,500 pound semi, we can't imagine the type of power this thing makes. We're currently digging a bit more, and may bring some additional info on it in a future issue of Diesel Power.

From what I heard not all the blowers are actuallu functional (some just for show) and its power output is pretty poor for its displacement..

A Detroit Diesel 24V-71 only has 4 blowers stock. All that chrome/extra blowers are for show. Notice how he completely closes the butter flies on the blowers when its running and it doesnt stall/die from being smothered...wouldnt that kill it if those blowers were actually being used?

Too make the power he claims he did that motor would needs some serious turbochargers...or use TONS of nitrous...lame. Turbocharing and 100mm injectors would call for different cylinder liners, pistons and rods also.

So its another nitrous feed diesel injected engine...like the Banks drag truck.

3. Once you hit the button, you dont care if your power comes from naaaws or not.

That being said, Hot Rodding is often crossed with art...in the late 80s and early 90s show cars that had little functionality were all the rage, but in my mind, they were still cool because of their outlandish nature. The fact that Mike built an engine that insane that actually runs is a major accomplishment in my book.

4. I saw this a long while back on youtube. Glad to see it's finally getting press. I seem to remember them saying that it made somewhere over 3000 hp, which doesn't sound that bad to me. It's not absolutely amazing, as there are a few (very few) production vehicles that have that power density, but overall power to weight matters as well, and if that really is a 9,500 lb. semi, then I do believe that it's in Veyron territory so far as power to weight is concerned.

Obviously it's not built as a pure performance rig, so I am not all that concerned about a couple of blowers that don't work or lofty power numbers. If you can still spank a ricer then you're doing good.
