1. I've just finished lower division Thermodynamics and I'm curious what exactly does an adiabatic engine do for you?

And I'm very interested in this sort of thing. Internal Combustion still has great potential and I love reading about the ways we are finding to develop it and apply it in awesome vehicles and such.

2. An adiabatic process is one in which no heat is gained or lost by the system. If you start with a higher temperature in the engine you get more of a chance to catch the energy as it goes towards entropy (or back to normal). Making the engines survive is then the challenge. Getting rid of the liquid cooling system (power waster) is something Rudolf Diesel wanted to do but unfortunately he had to add liquid cooling.

My understanding is an adiabatic engine is an ideal engine that uses all the heat energy instead of 25 to 40 percent which engines of today only convert.

3. I think diesels have adiabatic compression but after that it falls apart. I heard if we could leave our exhaust valves closed we'd send the piston into the floor. More than 1/2 of the energy is wasted out the exhaust. Turbochargers make our engines more adiabatic if I'm thinking about this right.
