Bilstein Upgrade

New Shocks = New Truck

Bilstein shock

After 16-plus years of service (and a ride that was only getting worse) we decided to upgrade the shocks on our '97 F-350...

Wanting the most comfortable ride and the best product available, we contacted Bilstein, which pointed us in the direction of its monotube, 5100 series units. With no specific shocks available for the old body style Ford trucks, the front shocks are actually intended for the '99 to '04 Super Duty (PN 33-187297), but work in our pre-Super Duty, one-ton application. The rears (PN 24-185530) were originally intended for '80 to '96 Broncos, but with a 4-inch rear lift height specified (to work with our 1-ton's 4-inch factory blocks), and they're a perfect match.

The new ride quality is a night and day difference, and the truck absorbs bigger bumps 10 times better. Don't get us wrong, it's still a leaf sprung 1-ton, but the Bilsteins made for a much more pleasant driving experience, and the truck rides better than it ever has. We highly recommend this route (and part numbers) for stock height, pre-Super Duty F-350 owners looking for better ride quality.

The passenger side factory shock (left) was completely FUBAR'd.
