Volkswagen recently announced it will be bringing back the diesel Beetle for the 2013 model year...

The newest generation of the Beetle will feature VW's latest TDI engine: a 2.0L common-rail engine that makes 140 hp and 236 lb-ft, and is straddled with both a high and low pressure EGR system, and a DPF. It's expected to be capable of 39 mpg highway—but just 29 mpg city. We know these are just estimates, but that's a far cry from what the older diesel Beetles saw for fuel economy.

Late 90s models equipped with the 1.9L diesel and a 5-speed manual saw real world mileage numbers approaching 50 mpg (48.6 combined in this study). Hopefully the newest New Beetle's fuel economy potential is simply underrated.
